Founded in 2011 by Dani Stephenson, Straight Forward’s clients include Detroit-born producer and singer-songwriter Maejor, whose CV includes writing and production credits with Justin Bieber, Trey Songz, Keri Hilson, Ne-Yo and Wiz Khalifa.

Maejor’s work on Bieber’s Purpose album earned him a Grammy nomination at this year’s awards, while his 2013 single “Lolly” featuring Bieber and Juicy J peaked at No. 19 on the Hot 100. More recently, the artist — real name Brandon Green — collaborated with Sao Paulo-born MC Livinho for his new single “Rebeca”, as well as Brazilian singer Anitta on the song “Vai Malandra,” which sparked controversy through its Terry Richardson-directed video.

The latter track has been streamed over 200 million times since its release late last year, according to Straight Forward. Maejor is additionally one half of alt-electronic duo AREA21 alongside Dutch DJ Martin Garrix. Under the terms of its A&R deal with Straight Forward president Stephenson, Maejor becomes part of Virgin EMI’s roster.

Joining him at the Universal imprint is DJ/producer Nevada, whose debut single “The Mack” featuring Fetty Wap and Mark Morrison has amassed over 280 million streams globally and sold over 2 million singles to date, according to the label. Nevada’s credits also include official remixes of Ed Sheerans’s “Castle on the Hill,” Charli XCX’s “BOYS” and Liam Payne’s “Strip That Down.”

“My ambition is to develop Straight Forward’s venture with Virgin EMI to break a variety of records from all genres and all cultures, to create the next generation of top 40 global stars,” Stephenson tells Billboard, praising Virgin EMI president Ted Cockle as “someone who I have looked up to for years, from the outside looking in.”

“His marketing expertise and track record in discovering and breaking hit artists is incredible,” says Stephenson.

Confirming the deal, Cockle said in a statement: “Dani’s energy could light up a city. He doesn’t see any borders to music, he’s constantly on the hunt to make or find global hit records. We’re delighted that Dani, Maejor, Nevada and the Straight Forward Recordings operation will now work alongside Virgin EMI.”

In addition to running Straight Forward Recordings, 32-year-old Stephenson writes and produces under the alias Pyramids In Paris and operates studio facilities in London, Stockholm and Amsterdam. He plans to open a studio complex in Los Angeles later this year.

The executive also manages London-based Nana Rogues, who has fashioned hits for Section Boys, Tinie Tempah, Anne-Marie and produced two tracks on Drake’s “More Life” album, including “Skepta Interlude” and global hit “Passionfruit.”
